Potential savings per year

*Estimated first-year savings for a household that sees a doctor several times a year and moves from an average silver plan to the lowest-cost bronze (high-deductible) plan plus DocTalker membership, with lab work about 70% lower for members, using 2026 Virginia premiums raised by the 16.9% average approved 2027 increase. Your results will vary.

Step 1 of 5

Who needs coverage?

We use ages to work out membership pricing.

What do you pay each month for health insurance now?

Your share of the premium for everyone on the plan.

What will your new monthly premium be?

Check your renewal notice or the 2027 plans you are comparing.

How often does your household see a doctor?

Include sick visits, checkups, and trips to urgent care.

With DocTalker, would you keep the same insurance plan?

Most of the savings come from pairing DocTalker with a high-deductible plan: you pay a lower premium, and DocTalker covers your everyday care while you work toward the deductible.

How the savings work

The savings come from two things working together: a lower-premium, high-deductible plan for the big expenses, and a DocTalker membership for everyday care. On a high-deductible plan alone, every visit, lab, and urgent care trip costs full price until you meet your deductible. With DocTalker, that everyday care is covered by one flat monthly fee.

  2. Use DocTalker for everyday careUnlimited visits, no copays, labs about 70% less, a doctor you can call 24/7
  3. Keep insurance for the big thingsHospital, specialists, imaging, emergencies

What everyday care costs before you meet your deductible

Full price on your own As a DocTalker member
Doctor visit about $180 $0
Urgent care visit about $195 $0 when we can see you same day
Emergency room visit about $2,750 Call your doctor first, 24/7; many visits can be avoided
Lab work full price about 70% less

Full prices are UnitedHealthcare median amounts. For a true emergency, always call 911.

How this healthcare cost calculator works

The calculator adds up what a year of healthcare could cost your household two ways. Without DocTalker, it counts your insurance premium plus what you would pay for primary care, urgent care, and emergency room visits. With DocTalker, it counts your premium (or a high-deductible plan, if you choose), your membership, and the urgent care and ER visits a doctor you can reach 24/7 may not prevent. The one-time registration fee is shown, never hidden.

Every number is an estimate you can change. Open “See how we calculated your estimate” to see each line.

Why your premium isn’t your total healthcare cost

Approved 2027 premiums for Virginia individual plans are up about 17% on average. Many people respond by choosing a plan with a lower premium and a higher deductible. On those plans, a doctor’s visit often costs the full price until the deductible is met, which can be several thousand dollars. That is why the premium alone rarely tells the whole story. A high-deductible plan saves money on premiums, and DocTalker makes it practical to keep using care: you see your doctor as often as you need without paying full price each time.

What does Direct Primary Care cost?

Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a membership for your primary care. At DocTalker Family Medicine in Vienna, VA, membership is $35 a month for children and dependents age 6 through 26 with a parent enrolled, $99 a month for adults 27 to 49, and $125 a month for adults 50 and over. Adults 18 to 26 joining without a parent pay the $99 adult rate. Patients under 18 must have a parent or guardian enrolled as a member. Membership is billed monthly with no long-term contract. There is a one-time $110 registration fee per person. Visits have no copays, and we don’t bill insurance for them. See full details on our pricing page.

Questions about this calculator

Where do the savings come from?
Mostly from pairing DocTalker with a high-deductible plan. The lower premium saves money every month. On that plan alone, visits, labs, and urgent care cost full price until you meet the deductible, so many people put off care. With DocTalker, everyday care is included in one flat monthly fee, labs cost about 70% less, and a doctor you can call 24/7 helps you avoid many urgent care and ER visits. Your insurance still covers hospital care, specialists, imaging, and emergencies.
Will I save money with Direct Primary Care?
Not always. It depends on your premium, your plan, and how often you need care. Some households spend less, and some spend a little more but choose DPC for easier access to their doctor. The calculator shows either result honestly.
Does Direct Primary Care replace health insurance?
No. DPC covers your primary care. You still need health insurance for hospital care, emergencies, specialists, imaging, and prescriptions.
Can I use DocTalker with employer insurance?
Yes. Membership works the same with any insurance plan, because we don’t bill insurance for visits.
Where do the default numbers come from?
Premium estimates use 2026 Virginia premiums (average silver $514 a month at age 40 from ValuePenguin; lowest-cost bronze $351 from KFF) raised by the 16.9% average approved 2027 increase. Visit costs use UnitedHealthcare’s published median prices ($180 primary care, $195 urgent care, $2,750 ER). Members pay about 70% less for lab work. The share of ER visits DPC may prevent (40%) comes from a Society of Actuaries study of one employer’s DPC members. You can replace any of these with your own numbers.
Is my information saved?
No. The calculator runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is stored or sent to us. If you choose to leave your name and email for follow-up, only those are sent.
Who will be my doctor?
Dr. Arun Bansal, MD, DocTalker’s owner and lead physician; Dr. Alan Dappen, MD, who founded DocTalker and has practiced in Vienna since 1992; and Anissa Ben Aida, FNP-BC, a board-certified family nurse practitioner with DocTalker for over 10 years. Dr. Bansal is a Castle Connolly Top Doctor (2025, 2026) and an Arlington Magazine Top Doctor (2026).
What is not included in membership?
Vaccines are billed separately, and house calls are billed on a separate fee schedule. Hospital care, emergencies, specialists, imaging, and prescriptions go through your health insurance. We care for patients age 6 and older.
Where is DocTalker located?
